Tugende Group, established on 14 April 2018 in Mkuyuni Ward, has become a shining example of how collective action, entrepreneurship, and sustainable agriculture can transform rural livelihoods. The group currently consists of 22 active members (12 men and 10 women) united around a shared vision of improving household incomes through spice production and nursery management. Supported under the Spice Project implemented by SAT, the group has specialized in raising high-quality spice seedlings, particularly clove, cinnamon, and black pepper.
Through dedication, improved nursery management practices, and strong teamwork, Tugende Group now produces between 120,000 and 150,000 seedlings annually, making it one of the leading community-based spice seedling producers in the area.

From Seedlings to Sustainable Prosperity
Income generated from seedling sales and spice production has enabled members to expand their agricultural investments significantly, with many transplanting seedlings from the group nursery into their own plots. The financial gains have translated into visible improvements in household welfare: several members have built new houses or renovated existing ones, and reliable income has allowed parents to pay school fees on time, ensuring their children's education continues without interruption.
Building Financial Resilience Beyond Agricultural Production
Tugende Group has also established a strong savings and lending component, giving members access to small loans that support farming activities, household needs, and emergencies without relying on costly external borrowing. Combined with seedling production and spice sales, this has created multiple income streams that strengthen household resilience and reduce economic vulnerability.
